A deep dive into the universe of 3D scanning & the wide range of applications for this technology. Whether your work focuses on storytelling, art, merchandising, e-commerce, product design or brand marketing, in this workshop, you will be exposed to all sorts of ways volumetric data can create & enhance an experience.
During this hands-on intensive, we will go over multiple projects created by capturing volumetric data from the real world & placing it in the digital one with techniques such as high-fidelity photogrammetry, laser scanning, & computer vision. RLab's 3D Scanning Intensive will take participants through not only the tools, but also the optimization methods for 3D scanned content so that these assets can be displayed in various platforms such as WebGL, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, & 3D printing.
In the course of 2 days, participants will have the opportunity to create 3D scans of different objects, environments, or even themselves. They will also get hands-on experience with prototyping a project for the web & augmented reality.
Taught by new media artists / creative technologists Michelle Hessel & Woraya (Mint) Boonyapanachoti, this intensive workshop will offer inspiration & important insights on current & future applications for 3D scanning.

Mint is a creative technologist born in Bangkok & based in NYC. Her work focuses on 3D immersive visualizations & integrating emerging technologies to explore new boundaries of reality & create engaging interactive experiences.
She is currently part of The New York Times Research & Development team. There, she is exploring how technology can unlock new forms of storytelling & developing new methods to advance the way journalism is delivered & experienced by readers. She has a background in Architecture & Design & a Master's in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University. Before moving to NYC in 2016, she worked in Japan & Thailand in architecture & scenography projects.
Michelle Hessel is a user experience designer & new media artist born in Sao Paulo & based in NYC. Her work inverts traditional storytelling focusing on 3D technology & virtual representations of culture such as food, people & spaces.
Currently at Peloton, Michelle obtained her Master's degree at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program, where she also did a 1-year art residency after graduating. Michelle's projects have been featured by The Economist, VICE Media, Communication Arts, & the Interaction Design Association. She has taught interactive media at City University of New York (CUNY) & at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
